Why a Building Permit?

1. Building Permits provide a means for Code Officials to protect the public by reducing the potential hazards of unsafe construction and therefore ensuring the public health, safety and welfare.

2. The Building Permit process promotes understanding and education of building codes, local laws and ordinances. Contractor and homeowner knowledge of construction materials and procedures is essential to safe, quality construction.

3. Building Permits provide the means for Code Officials to inspect construction to ensure that minimum standards are met and appropriate materials are used.

The City of South Haven adopted the Michigan Building Code and is currently under the 2003 Michigan Building Code and the 2003 Residential Code.

"This code shall control all matters concerning the construction, alteration, addition, repair, removal, demolition, location, occupancy, and maintenance of all buildings and structures, and shall apply to existing or proposed buildings and structures."
