Recreation South Haven offers a wealth of opportunities for people who work, live and visit this community. South Haven, "By the Big Blue Water" on the shores of Lake Michigan, has been blessed with five miles of pristine, sandy beaches and the beauty of water. As one would expect, water-related activities are a popular summer past-time. The lake provides miles of beaches for swimming, sunbathing, water sports, and picnicking. There are seven public beaches or access points for Lake Michigan within city limits. The largest and most frequently used beaches are South Beach and North Beach offering amenities such as concession stands, children's playground equipment, parking, set up for volleyball play, and the big red lighthouse (at South Beach).
Three municipal marinas and several privately-owned marinas provide some of the best boating amenities in the state. Fishing for steelhead, salmon, perch and trout are enjoyed by boat, pier or the new fishermen's access on the Black River.
Golfing is offered at three area golf courses including HawksHead, designed by Arthur Hills, and the Ravines, designed by Arnold Palmer. For a casual walk downtown, a self-guided walking tour of many historical buildings is offered by the Historical Association of South Haven. The relaxing, slower pace allows time to enjoy a wide array of sites, activities and events. |
