Welcome to the City of South Haven Website.

Thank you for visiting the City of South Haven web site. Whether you are a year-round resident, part-time resident, business owner or visitor, our beautiful city located along the sandy beaches of Lake Michigan has an abundance to offer you.

Founded in 1869 and incorporated as a city in 1902, South Haven today is a vibrant community of approximately 5,000 year-round residents. Our population swells in the summertime as people from all over the midwest come to visit. The city is proud of its rich maritime, resort and agricultural hertitage and annually holds festivals to celebrate that history.

Whether you're here for a day or a lifetime, you'll find a healthy business district and industrial parks, strong schools, beautiful marinas and parks, and a charming, walkable community.

South Haven truly is a great place to live, work or visit.

Sincerely,

Mayor Appleyard

Mayor Dorothy Appleyard
Elected mayor in 2005, Dorothy is nearly a life-long resident of South Haven. She moved here with her family when she was 4 years old and has been happy to call South Haven home ever since. In the 1980s, Dorothy co-owned a small business downtown and was an active member of the Chamber of Commerce. Through the years she assisted her husband, Ed, in his family’s business, Appleyard Studio, a local photography company founded by his grandfather in the 1920s.

Dorothy and Ed share an interest in history and preservation which they have expressed through the restoration and rehabilitation of several area houses and rental properties over the years including their latest project – a 19th Century home that they have been renovating during their active retirement. In 2000, Dorothy and Ed took their interest a step further and helped found the Historical Association of South Haven.

Dorothy’s passion for preservation is matched by her interest in gardening and the environment. In 2002, she was appointed to the South Haven Parks Commission and she has been active in the coordination of local Arbor Day activities.

Dorothy and her husband have two grown daughters and one granddaughter.
